PMH27 Impact of State Laws Restricting Opioid Prescriptions forAcute Pain on Opioid-Related Overdose Deaths Assessed Via Interrupted Time Series Analyses

Many states have implemented limitations on opioid prescriptions for patients with acute pain. Few studies investigated relationships between prescribing restrictions and clinical outcomes. We assessed effects of pain restriction laws trends in opioid-related overdose deaths among that these policies. evaluated the state three outcomes: all-opioid, prescription opioid, heroin-related deaths. ascertained death counts using corresponding ICD-10 codes from Centers Disease Control Prevention’s Wide-ranging OnLine Data Epidemiologic Research database. included if they: 1) had complete unsuppressed data any outcome during all months 2013 2018, 2) an law 2014-2017. fitted interrupted time series models control accounting autocorrelation. Controls were generated combined six outcomes not period 2013-2017. For heroin outcomes, thirteen, nine, seven met inclusion criteria analysis, respectively. Twelve showed a decreased trend all-opioid post-law relative to counterfactual, being statistically significant (decreases ranging 0.17 0.85 per 1,000,000 month; p<0.05).
